Living in an apartment doesn't mean that you have to give up on having a pet. It also doesn't mean that the only "pet" you can get is a gold fish, or a caged bird. While we all might love to have some exotic animals from time to time, the truth is that dogs are the pets that never go out of fashion and there are quite a few great reasons for that. After all, who could love you back better than this four-legged fluff of joy?

As listed on websites like holista pet, there are various different breeds that you can choose from when you make that important decision and start searching for your next canine. Yet, not all of those breeds are actually suitable for apartments, nor would all of them love living in such a tiny space. I said tiny, because no matter how huge the apartment is, it is definitely small for certain breeds that will be happiest with a huge yard that's theirs to explore.

So, while you don't have to give up the idea of having a canine when living in an apartment, you certainly do have to carefully think about which breed you will be bringing home with you. Luckily, there are some dogs who can be extremely happy in an apartment and, what's more, certain breeds are pretty low maintenance, meaning that you won't have to worry about all the work you'll have to do when keeping them in a flat. Let us take a look at those breeds that might be perfect for your situation.

French Bulldog

How could you possibly resist the grumpy, wrinkled face of the adorable little Frenchies? These are the perfect apartment breed not only because they are so tiny, but also because they don't require too much maintenance. They will quickly come to terms with and accept all your daily habits, thus adapting to your general lifestyle. The only thing is, their snoring might wake you up from time to time.

Pug

Speaking of grumpy and wrinkled faces, pugs are definitely the winners of that competition. They're a bit mischievous and playful, but with proper training, they can turn into the best behaved apartment dog. They do want your attention, though, so if you are thinking of leaving it alone for long periods of time, I suggest you think twice. Or, at least learn more about what it is that makes them good apartment dogs and then find out how to keep them happy.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Intelligent, quiet, loving, friendly and adorable - what more could you possibly want from an apartment pup? If those are your criteria, then the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel could just be the perfect choice for you. Every single Cavalier owner will tell you that this particular breed can live just about anywhere and adapt to any kind of a setting and any conditions.

Greyhound

If you were under the impression that no large dog could possibly be happy in an apartment, then you were definitely wrong. People generally believe that the size can be an issue, while the truth is that the temperament plays a much bigger role here. So, while Greyhounds are certainly huge, their loving and calm personality makes them perfect for small spaces. Even though they are practically the fastest breed in the world, their beauty lies in the fact that they can easily adapt to small spaces and they don't need much room in order to function properly. Don't forget, though, that they do need exercise.

Shiba Inu

While Shiba Inus do require regular walks and exercise, their independent personality will make them perfect for apartments. Given that independence, they are highly unlikely to make a fuss or become anxious when left alone. Plus, Shibas are pretty quiet, so your neighbors won't have anything to complain about.

Shih Tzu

Not only is a Shih Tzu perfectly suitable for small places, it's also the breed that has next to no issues getting along with adults, kids, as well as other dogs. This is really a huge plus. You won't have to worry about what will happen if you bring friends over.
