"Sense8" is not the type of show that people can leave on in the background and still be able to understand what is happening.

The sci-fi Netflix original series, created, written and executive-produced by Andy and Lana Wachowski and J. Michael Straczynski, is intense, ambitious and artistic. It requires its viewers to stay invested in the plot as well as the characters and although those who watch it love it, the show has not been able to grab the attention of the public imagination.

Despite the viewers' love for the show, Netflix still has not renewed the show.

Straczynski revealed at Comic-Com that they will know "within two weeks" whether or not they will be working on a season 2.

Sense8 revolves around eight strangers all from different cultures living in different parts of the world. Due to some unknown cause, they become linked mentally and emotionally after every single one of them has a vision of a violent death. The eight are then reborn as Sensates and are able to use each other's skills and knowledge to better understand what is happening to them.

The show addresses several controversial topics such as politics, religion, sexuality, identity and gender.

"It's such a pleasure dealing with gender issues, privacy issues, sexuality issues that really have not been seen before on television," Straczynski said, via CBR.

Peter Flynn of Moviepilot.com explained how the show manages to be diverse without tokenism. Flynn wrote:

"Sense8 is one of the most diverse shows to grace our screens in recent memory. It practically lives and dies based on the sheer range of cultures, creeds, ethnicities, genders and sexualities it's able to present with the utmost sincerity. It is however important to tout Sense8 not as a one off example of real diversity. Tokenism simply doesn't exist in the world of Sense8, so why treat the show itself as such? Sense8 isn't just a case of throwing in the odd LGBT character or person of color to appease demographics; it's a genuine example of how easy it is to include all facets of humanity in a broad and epic story!

Now what does Sense8 do differently to all these others? Well, Sense8 genuinely feels like it hinges upon multiple perspectives across the planet, rather than just having multiple nations involved for the sake of spicing up the settings. There is a global consciousness going on in Sense8 that the likes of Heroes was never able to capture. It may be expensive, and seem a huge undertaking, but going ahead with Sense8 Season 2 will allow one of the most humanistic TV shows ever to carry on!"

The 12-episode series was released on June 5.
