Sony Picture Entertainment and Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe has named Spider-Man the latest superhero to join the Avengers.

There is currently no word on who will be cast as Spider-Man, a role that was most recently played by English actor Andrew Garfield. Tobey Maguire played the superhero in the first trilogy, "Spider-Man," "Spider-Man 2" and "Spider-Man 3." However, if Twitter fans could have it their way, Donald Glover will be the next Spider-Man.

Glover, who is known for his role as Troy on the hit TV show "Community," is gaining a lot of support on Twitter. The hashtag, #DonaldForSpiderman was a trending topic worldwide on Tuesday. The actor, who also raps as Childish Gambino, was the inspiration for Miles Morales, a half-black, half-Hispanic teen that becomes Spider-Man following the death of Peter Parker, the original Spider-Man.

Morales, who was created by writer Brain Michael Bendis, first appeared in Ultimate Fallout #4. The Ultimate Comics: Fallout is a comic book limited series that was published by Marvel Comics in July 2011. In the Disney XD's animated TV show, "Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors," Morales was voiced by Glover.

The deal will also feature the next installment of the Spider-Man franchise, which will be co-produced by Marvel Studios' Kevin Fiege and former Sony studio's Amy Pascal. The solo Spider-Man film has a release date of July 28, 2017.

"Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world's most beloved characters," Feige said in a statement. "Marvel's involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years."

Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger, added, "Spider-Man is one of Marvel's great characters, beloved around the world. We're thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building."

There is no word yet on which Spider-Man character the movie will follow. Online support is leaning towards Morales.
