Remote work is rewarding for a number of reasons. Liberated from the confines of a traditional workplace setting, you can increase your productivity while striking a better work/life balance. Add to that the fact that you can travel the world - seeing new cultures and countries - while you do it, and it's a small wonder more people haven't caught on.

Remote workers like digital nomads aren't in the easiest position at present, however. Those who haven't been able to fly home, whether due to local restrictions or a lack of funds, find themselves working-in-place for the foreseeable future. It's not ideal, but it could be worse.

Even those who've arrived home now face the prospect of working remotely from a single location. To help both these types of remote workers - the ones abroad and the ones newly at home - here's a list of five essential items to make the workday easier.

Re-Wearables

Digital nomads, especially, need clothing they can rely on to stay fresh for a while. Going through multiple shirts a week (more in hot and humid areas) can really rack up a laundry bill, forcing you to make precarious, pricey trips to the cleaners.

An essential item, therefore, in the remote worker's arsenal are "re-wearables", clothing that stays clean for a long time. Certain fabrics, like merino wool, are known to be anti-microbial, sweat-wicking and breathable, meaning you can get two-weeks worth or more out of a single shirt between washes. Merino wool clothing that's both professional and casual isn't always easy to come by, but companies like Unbound Merino do a fantastic job.

An Aeropress

A hot, reliable, quality cup of coffee can be surprisingly difficult to come by, especially when various lockdown measures have either shuttered local coffee shops or limited their service. Enter the Aeropress. With just this space-age-looking tube and some coffee grounds (no filter required) you've got yourself an effortless morning brew.

A Mobile Hotspot

Anyone who's worked remotely abroad knows the struggle: you live and die by the wifi. Some days, the wifi gods smile upon you, and there's no cause for concern. Other days, you're hurriedly moving from café to café in search of just a little connection to get that time-sensitive deliverable in on time. Take fate out of the equation with a mobile hotspot - wherever you go, there will be wifi.

A Portable Charger

Similar to wifi, it's incredibly aggravating when you lose juice on your phone or computer without a clear line to an outlet. In the worst of cases, it can negate an entire day's work. Don't get caught out in the world with a thin red bar in your battery icon. If you're planning on continuing remote work, make the small investment: get a portable charger.

A Portable Water Filter

Finally, this one directly applies to digital nomads who like to move around a lot, especially in parts of the world where drinkable water is in short supply. If you don't want to be at the mercy of the local taps, and you're tired of wasting plastic by buying bottle after bottle of water, consider a portable water filter.

Whether you're confined at home or stuck on the road, these essential items can make your remote work easie
