"Sherlock" Season 4 is suggested to have a darker plot given the debut of the darkest villain, Culverton Smith. As it seems, the series comeback is very exciting but recent news claimed that we might see the last of "Sherlock" on its fourth season. If this sounds interesting, continue reading below to know why this could be the last season of the show according to actor Benedict Cumberbatch who portrays the role of Sherlock Holmes.

The new villain, Smith, is said to be different from Sherlock's former enemies. A report from NewsEveryDay revealed that Smith is pure evil and Sherlock himself is horrified by him. The interesting addition of an evil big bad may entice more viewers to watch the show but unfortunately, "Sherlock" Season 4 may wrap up the storyline for good.

GQ interviewed Cumberbatch where it was revealed that the actor feels like Season 4 of "Sherlock" is "the end of an era." He also claimed that the story had progressed to the point that it would be difficult to follow on right away. However, he clarified that they are not closing doors for a possibility of another season.

"We never say never on the show. I'd love to revisit it, I'd love to keep revisiting it, I stand by that, but in the immediate future we all have things that we want to crack on with and we've made something very complete as it is, so I think we'll just wait and see," Cumberbatch told GQ. The actor also expressed how he is not happy about not being able to play as Sherlock again and said that the idea is "galling."

However, it is yet to be confirmed whether or not "Sherlock" will be ending on only four seasons. The team behind the fictional private detective drama has not given an official statement about its finale. That said, fans are advised to take speculations with a grain of salt.

"Sherlock" Season 4 is expected to air on Jan. 1, 2017. The following episodes will air on Jan. 8 and Jan. 15 according to RadioTimes. For now, enjoy watching the cryptic teaser promo of "Sherlock" Season 4 below.
