Since its release in 2014, an "Edge Of Tomorrow" sequel has been publicized as it wowed audiences with its time-bending narrative of its characters portrayed by Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Director Doug Liman's recent comments suggest that the next instalment is not only going to be a follow-up, but also is going to be a prequel.

Doug Liman made this declaration while chatting with Collider about his new virtual reality television series "Invisible." The conversation soon turned to Edge Of Tomorrow 2, though, and Liman was eager to reveal that plans for the blockbuster are just as ambitious as they were for the original.

"That is the only sequel that I'm considering doing, and it's because first of all the story is so amazing - much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film- and second of all, it's a sequel that's a prequel," Liman stated.

Liman further stated that he had these intellectual ideas on how to make a sequel that is unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and he has a script and this idea that fits perfectly into that idea, before he then admitted that he has high hopes that his work on "Edge Of Tomorrow 2" could in fact change how filmmakers and studios approach sequels.

"Edge Of Tomorrow" was one of the most lauded blockbusters of 2014. Based on the Japanese novel "All You Need Is Kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, the film is set in the year 2020 on an Earth that has been invaded by an alien race called the Mimics. Tom Cruise's Bill Cage, who starts off as a public relations officer that's never seen combat before, is thrust into the first wave of a crucial battle against the aliens, according to Inquisitr.

Bill Cage dies in combat, only to come back to life because of a time loop that sends him back to the day before the battle, something that occurs every time he perishes in the film. Cage soon decides to team up with Emily Blunt's Rita Vrataski, a Special Forces warrior, and the pair look for alternative ways to defeat the aliens.

"Edge Of Tomorrow" went on to gross $370.5 million from its $178 million budget. The film also scored a Rotten Tomatoes score of 90 percent amongst critics.

Doug Liman is currently developing "Justice League: Dark," while Tom Cruise is currently working for "Mission: Impossible 6," and Emily Blunt is set to film "Mary Poppins: Returns" throughout 2017. With the show runners being busy, the prequel and sequel might have to wait.
