Fans are starting to get hyped over the purported 2016 release of the third installment of the highly popular world action-adventure game 'Mafia'.

A possible retailer leak has created an overnight frenzy among fans when a Gamestop listing offers the game for $59.99 which shall be released on Xbox, PS 4, and PC.

The April 26 listing on Gamestop might be closest clue we get on the actual release date of Mafia 3. After all, Ecumenical News report mentioned that it's a common behavior among retailers to give a placeholder date to consumers even in the absence of an official announcement from the game publisher. In an Amazon listing, the game is set to launch on 30 December.

Nevertheless, 2K Games did issue a statement via IGN earlier this year confirming the 2016 release of Mafia 3 although the developers remain silent on the official launch date.

"Mafia III will release in calendar 2016 during Take-Two Interactive's fiscal year 2017. No official release date has been announced at this time. It is common practice for retailers to list placeholder dates before an official release date has been announced due to the requirements of their operating systems," 2k Games official statement as quoted by IGN.

As for other details, Game Zone stated that Mafia 3 shall be set in 1968 New Orleans with a story revolving around biracial Lincoln Clay- an orphan and a hardened Vietnam War veteran who rose to found his own criminal organization. But after Italian mob destroyed his own crime family, Clay plots his bloody revenge.

Segment Next also reported that the character is brought to life by 'Hemlock Grove' star Alex Hernandez after doing a number of motion-capture sessions for the game's protagonist.

It can be remembered that Mafia 3 was first rumored to be released iin November 2012 with 2K2 Czech, the original creator of Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven and Mafia II, behind the project. However, the company had undergone massive restructuring on January 10, 2014 with its headquarters in Prague moved to Novato, California. They then called the new studio as Hangar 13. Mafia 3 was first teased by the same company on July 28, 2015
