Leaked media reports have been circulating in rumor land about a purported March 21 release of Apple's 4-inch mini-iPhone equipped with a faster chip just a day before the tech giant is scheduled to face with FBI over a court order forcing the company to help the feds create a backdoor access to the device used by one of the San Bernardino attackers a report from USA Today stated.

Apple's new mobile handset shall be named as iPhone SE (Special Edition) which is expected to be officially unveiled next month together with a 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

"Sources say that Apple has decided to drop the '5' from the device's name and simply call it the iPhone SE. This will mark the first iPhone upgrade without a number in its name and would logically remove it from a yearly update cycle," a Daily Mail report quoted from an article picked up from 9to5Mac.

So, what features will the mini-iPhone have?

Citing intelligence research note from KGI securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, BGR details the devices purported features and estimated pricing:

Features: Corroborating previously leaked reports, the 4-inch iPhone will be equipped with NFC chip to process Apple Pay functionality, A9 processor, 802.11ac Wi-Fi capability, 12-megapixel rear camera, and Bluetooth 4.2.

Pricing: If reports prove to be accurate, the new iPhone SE will be priced around $400 to $500. Along with the release of the new handset, its older cousin, iPhone 5s shall be lowered down to $225.

Despite the tech hype the rumors created, analysts cautioned that Apple doesn't have plans yet for pre-orders for the new devices as plans may still be subjected to sudden changes.
