Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey, endorsed Donald Trump for president on Friday.

During the press conference, Christie, who ended his own presidential run after the New Hampshire primary, said the Republican frontrunner is their best bet at beating the Democratic nomination.

"The single most important thing for the Republican Party is to nominate the person who gives us the best chance to beat Hillary Clinton. I can guarantee that the one person Hillary and Bill Clinton don't want to see on that stage come next September is Donald Trump," Christie said reported by NBC News. "He is rewriting the playbook of American politics because he is providing strong leadership that is not dependent upon the status quo. The best person to beat Hillary Clinton in November is undoubtedly Donald Trump."

Trump thanked Christie for the endorsement, stating, "It is my great honor to receive the endorsement of the Governor. We have had a wonderful relationship for many years. He is a solid person that I have tremendous respect for. I am really proud to receive the support of the Governor and his family."

The endorsement came one day after GOP candidate Marco Rubio changed up his tactic by attacking Trump at the CNN Republican Debate, a move that Christie has called "desperate." He added that Rubio's behavior was a reflection of a "losing campaign."

Trump later added, "He's a desperate guy. He is not presidential material. He doesn't have the demeanor. He is a nervous nellie."

Shortly after news of the endorsement surfaced, many were speculating that Christie could be Trump's vice president nomination. Trump has stated that they have not talked about that at all. Christie added that he has every intention to finish his term, which ends on Jan. 19, 2018.

Christie is the highest-profile elected official to back Trump, who is looking to win many of the states in Super Tuesday primaries next week.
