Thanksgiving is always a very busy time of the year and according to AAA Travels, 46.9 million Americans will be traveling away from their homes during the upcoming holiday. The forecast, which is estimating 300,000 more travelers this season, covers people who will be travelling at least 50 miles away.

AAA Travels also predicted, based on the low gas prices at an average of $2.15 per gallon that 2015 will have the highest rate of car travels. Approximately 90 percent of the people will be using their cars. Overall, 2015 is on track to have the highest number of travelers since 2007.

"This Thanksgiving, more Americans will carve out time to visit friends and family since 2007," said Marshall Doney, AAA President and CEO, reported in the news release. "While many people remain cautious about the economy and their finances, many thankful Americans continue to put a premium on traveling to spend the holiday with loved ones."

Doney added, "One holiday gift has come early this year. Americans will likely pay the lowest Thanksgiving gas prices since 2008. Lower prices are helping boost disposable income, and enabling families to kick off the holiday season with a Thanksgiving getaway."

The experts, who estimated these numbers based on data from the IHS Global Insight, are advising people to plan their trips accordingly, especially in regards to weather and traffic. They are also warning people to be careful about potential drunk drivers since so many people will be on the road.

Other findings from the forecast include:

-Low gas prices will save motorists $265 million daily.

-Car rental prices are about eight percent higher than last year at an average of $60.

-Airplane tickets are expected to be about 10 percent lower than last year. The average round-trip ticket for 40 of the nation's top domestic routes is $169.

-The rate of people traveling by air has increased by 0.1 percent. Traveling by all other kinds of transportation (cruises, trains, etc.) declined by 1.4 percent.

-From Nov. 20 to Dec. 1, there will be about 25.3 million passengers, according to Airlines for America.

-The days with the most amount of travel are Wednesday, Nov. 25, Sunday, Nov. 29, and Monday, Nov. 30.

Thanksgiving is observed from Wednesday, Nov. 25 to Sunday, Nov. 29.
