The German police have discovered the remains of what appear to be seven babies inside an empty home in a small Bavarian town.

The authorities found the bodies inside a room of an apartment in Wallenfels after a local woman alerted emergency services after finding one body on Thursday afternoon. Some of the remains, which were in "bad condition," were wrapped in towels while others were found in plastic bags. The police have opened an investigation.

"The investigation is going at full speed but it will take some more time before the results of the investigation can be discussed," a police spokesperson said to NBC News.

As of right now, the police believe that there are seven bodies with some media outlets reporting that there are eight bodies. The forensic examinations, which started on Friday but "will take some time," should be able to determine the exact number of babies involved and potentially the causes of death. The police added that the results should be ready by next week.

The police stated that the property's last resident is a 45-year-old woman, who they have not been able to locate. The women, according to her neighbors reported by the newspaper, Bild, mysteriously disappeared back in September. The police did not say whether or not they believe that she is a suspect. She is being sought out as the potential mother of the babies.

"I live wall-to-wall with them and heard nothing," next-door neighbor, Elisabeth Köstner, said reported by the New York Times.

The police are questioning several other people at the moment.

Wallenfels, located in the northeast of Bavaria, has a population of around 2,800.
