Game of Thrones movie is said to be in the planning stage, says George R. R. Martin. However, he will not be participating in the big screen version. While speaking about the plans after HBO's Emmy after party, Martin said that the movie project will be headed by the showrunners, Dan Weiss and David Benioff. Daily Star quoted Martin saying "I have too much to do. That is something HBO and ... DB and David are dealing with."

As reported by Collider, the Michael Lombardo, President of Programming - HBO, said that as per his latest discussion with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, Game of Thrones may come to an end by season 8. However, the series is set to be continued in the form of movies in a theatre. According to an insider source, this idea seems to appear very likely in the future.

Michael Lombardo also said that once the series draws to a close after season 8, the fans will be surprised with a prequel movie or the finale can be drawn into a feature length movie. However, he says that the fans don't have to worry yet. HBO will not want to upset the loyal viewers by changing the format of their favorite show when it approaches the finale, as told to Entertainment Weekly.

Even though the movie has all the makings of a blockbuster, HBO is not very keen on switching the formats just yet. It would be like snubbing their subscribers. Lombardo Said, "But when you start a series with our subscribers, the promise is that for your HBO fee that we're going to take you to the end of this. I feel that on some level [a movie would be] changing the rules: Now you have to pay $16 to see how your show ends", reports Entertainment Weekly.
