A study by the American Chemical Society (ACS) last year found that sugars found in the plant that is used to make tequila can bring down blood glucose levels for those who have type 2 diabetes. It can also help those who are obese to lose weight, according to researchers.

Agavins is an avatar of sugar that is usually found in the agave plant and is non-digestible. It can be used as a dietary fiber, so that it will not shoot blood sugar.

"We have found that since agavins reduce glucose levels and increase GLP-1, they also increase the amount of insulin," said Mercedes G. López, Ph.D and one of the researchers. GLP-1 is a hormone that slows the stomach from emptying, and stimulates production of insulin. "Agavins are not expensive and they have no known side effects, except for those few people who cannot tolerate them," López added. Hence, those who eat agavins tend to feel full faster and eat less.

The experiment was conducted on mice, to which the scientists gave a standard diet, adding agavins to some of their water. The agavins made the mice eat less than the others, and gave them lower blood glucose levels.

The scientists of this study feel that agavins are good sweetener substitutes, because "they are sugars, highly soluble, have a low glycemic index, and a neutral taste, but most important, they are not metabolized by humans," according to elitedaily.

The result of the experiment showed that the effects of consuming agavins made them better than other artificial sweeteners like aspartame and agave syrup. Eating a lot of agavins led to the production of GLP-1 hormone.
