Martin Freeman, known for such roles as Bilbo Baggins in The Lord Of The Rings and Dr. Watson in the series Sherlocke Holmes, will be joining the cast of Marvel's third installment of Captain America movie franchise to be released in 2016.

According to Irish Examiner, Marvel announced it on Twitter confirming the 43-year old actor's participation in the film.

Captain America: Civil War Producer Kevin Feige also made an official announcement in the Marvel website stating that Martin's outstanding performance in previous films made him deserving for a spot in the next Marvel blockbuster.

From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in 'The Office,' Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us. We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe," the filmmaker said.

Announcements for his role are still not available as of writing.

However, Cinema Blend speculated that the Sherlocke Holmes star will be taking a minor role.

"Freeman's not playing a superhero, or a villain. His casting wouldn't be posted to Marvel.com casually if that were the case. One colleague already has suggested that Freeman could be cast as Henry Peter Gyrich, a government liaison who interacts with The Avengers, and eventually became a member of the Commission on Superhuman Activities... something we assume will have to be very popular in the Civil War storyline," Sean O'connell wrote.

BBC said that Captain America: Civil War's plot will focused on Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man's (Robert Downey Jr.) misunderstanding that has been hinted in the end of the newest Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Their fight entails Marvel character to take sides with either of the two major superheroes.

Aside from Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch has also been assigned to play Marvel's Dr. Strange in a solo film.
