At f8 developer conference, Facebook announced that it's extending Parse - a suite of back-end software development tools - to create Internet of Things apps for devices such as activity trackers and smart home appliances.

The company also unveiled three new software development kits aimed specifically at IoT in hopes to strengthen its ties to a wider group of developers.

Aim of the recently released tools is to make it easier for developers to build apps that interface with Internet connected devices.

One of the first to brace Parse is garage door manufacturer Chamberlain that lets people open and lock garage door from their smartphones.

Another use of Parse could be in a smart gardening device that sends notifications to remind the user to water their plants, Ilya Sukhar, CEO of Parse, said during a keynote talk at F8.

Parse provides a hosted back-end infrastructure to help third party developers build their apps. Over 400,000 developers have built apps with Parse, Sukhar said.

New Parse SDKs are available on GitHub and on Parse's site.

Facebook bought Parse in 2013.
