Scientists at the University of Exeter said that sitting for long periods does not make a person unhealthy, but an activity that is sedentary, "where energy expenditure is low," is not healthy, especially if it involves sitting or standing for too long, according to HNGN.

It is important, therefore, to be on the go all the time, so that small bouts of energy can be expended.

Keep an activity tracker, your smartphone's alarm or an app that can alert you that it is time to "take a break and move on.

The best way to get your metabolism cracking in the beginning of the day is to just start with "simple stretches or crunches and squats" right inside your house, so that you can get ready and tone your body. A 7-minute workout app from iTunes or Google Play, for instance, can give you some ideas.

You need to stay in slightly colder rooms, or just lower your room's temperature, so that your body is pressurised to burn calories and expend a lot of energy.

Increase your tasks in order to expend more calories, instead of multitasking. Hence, instead of trying to finish your activities at one go, you could burn 89 calories by carrying all the loads in two or three walks.

Even chewing gum can reduce your appetite and burn 11 calories in an hour, according to experts via NBC News. "One theory is that chewing stimulates nerves in the jaw that are connected to the brain region responsible for satiety," nutrition professor Kathleen Melanson said.
