They call it bullet-proof coffee, butter coffee or fat black. But putting butter on your morning coffee is said to speed up metabolism and make you lose weight.

Said to be the brainchild of U.S. entrepreneur Dave Asprey, the bulletproof coffee is originally for trekkers in Tibet to provide them with an energy-packed drink that could keep them going through long hours of assertion, Daily Mail said.

Further, this lead Asprey to come up with 'the bullet-proof diet' that somehow adheres to the idea that carbohydrates and not fats make a person gain weight. This is also similar to the idea of 'ketosis' which believes that with the absence of carbs (such as sugar, bread and pasta), our body will use fats from our muscles and thus speeding up metabolism.

According to the Shape, the drink has been gaining popularity in the US and the UK market. Celebrities like Silicon Valley execs, NBA players, pro surfer Laird Hamilton and actress Shailene Woodley are also making bulletproof coffee as part of their diet.

To make the bullet-proof coffee, Emirates 24/7 Lifestyle said that organic coffee, grass-fed, unsalted butter and organic coconut oil.

Meanwhile, experts clarified certain health-related theories that people associate with this new coffee-butter brew.

Jenna A. Bell, PhD, RD, sports dietician and author of Energy to Burn: The Ultimate Food & Nutrition Guide to Fuel Your Active Lifestyle said that bullet-proof coffee alone cannot make you lose weight. Incorporating it in your regimen also means changing some aspects in your lifestyle.

"Fat is more satiating than nothing, so if you add it to your morning cup, you may feel full longer. However, turning your 80-calorie cup of coffee into an 400-plus-calorie mug is unlikely to promote weight loss given that its ingredients-coffee, butter and oils-have not been shown to promote weight loss independently or when stirred together."

However, for Nutritionist Suzie Walker, the bullet-proof coffee has been very effective to stop her food cravings in the morning.

"I like to start the day with a bullet coffee. It fills me up, keeps me focused and I don't have to think about eating again until lunchtime," she said.

Bullet coffee is said to be available in the posh Planet Organic in London and costs around £2.55 per cup. It is also called 'Smart Coffee' in the juice chain, Crusssh.
