History Channel's bloody series "The Vikings" returns for a third season tonight and its creator, British writer Michael Hirst reveals some of what fans can expect this season in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

In terms of plot, Hirst, who writes every single episode in the series, hinted that Ragner Lothbrok's role as king will not be about power alone. Instead, the story line will focus more on what it means to be the king and how Ragner will rule in relation to his people. Ragner is more interested in helping his people settle and set their roots.

"Ragnar has never wanted power for its own sake. It's not the only thing that matters. This isn't Game of Thrones," Hirst said.

Actor Travis Fimmel, who plays Ragner also offered his insight into this character, who assumed the role of king at the end of the season.

Fimmel said, "There are great power struggles and all the stuff that comes with power, a lot more negativity than positivity, all the detrimental stuff, all the mistrust issues. We come to the end of the season and it's the first time Ragnar actually says, 'I'm king, it's my word or no word.' He never said that, he never wanted to be earl or king and finally at the end of the year he says, 'I'm king and we're doing it my way.'"

Ragner's curiosity and drive this season, however, could lead to several plot twists. Hirst reveals that the Vikings will be attacking Paris some time this season.

"I can't wait for you to see it: We attack the walls of Paris, with all these ladders and hundreds of extras, and people going up the ladders, and we set the ladders on fire," he described.

The new season, which airs at 10 p.m. ET, will begin with Ragner leading his people to Wessex England. Upon arriving in England, Ragner will find out whether or not King Ecbert, played by Linus Roache, will uphold his promises. Ragner, known for being restless, will want to venture to Paris.

Hirst added to The Hollywood Reporter, "Season three is our best season yet it's our most ambitious season yet, and there are a lot of shocks and tragedies and unexpected events along the way."
