A Frenchman was jailed for bombarding his girlfriend with  21,807 text messages and phone calls over a 10-month period.

He wanted her to thank him for fixing her flat. The unnamed 33-year-old man is From Rhones in southern France and has admitted that he acted stupidly, reports the Telegraph.

"At the time, my logic was that until she returns the money ... or at least says thank you, I would not stop the calls," he told the court in Lyon, reports the news.au.com. "I tell myself, with hindsight, that it was stupid."

He has been sentenced to 10 months of jail, six of them suspended and barred from any contact with his girlfriend. He was also fined $1300

It took a thank you from his friend to stop the harassment. "She tried to block her line, but he phoned her parents instead and her workplace," said Manuella Spee, lawyer for the victim, a 32-year-old teacher, reports the Guardian.

The man has a history of depression and did not take it well when his girlfriend broke off the relationship in 2011. He has been advised to seek psychiatric help.

Previous research has shown that one in five men and one in four women snoop on their partners by going through their cellphones and emails, reports the Daily Mail.

Nearly a quarter of the research subjects said they did it because they were plain nosy and 12 percent did it because they wanted to catch out their partners.
