Once popular file sharing service RapidShare is shutting down on March 31, 2015, the company announced.

"Kindly note that RapidShare will stop the active service on March 31st, 2015. Extensions of STANDARD PLUS and PREMIUM will be possible until February 28th, 2015. We strongly recommend all customers to secure their data. After March 31st, 2015 all accounts will no longer be accessible and will be deleted automatically," the notice read.

RapidShare was started in 2002. In short time, it became extremely popular as it allowed paying users to get access to unauthorized movies, games, music and other kinds of shared files.

Once it was also one of the 50 most popular site on the planet - controlling up to 5 percent of the Internet's total traffic.

Recently, RapidShare started marketing itself as a cloud storage service and took down many pirated content. It even shut down its free service that allowed non-paying customers to download some files for free daily at slower speeds.
