Valentine's Day may be a creepy time for broken hearts, but some angry people can savour the holiday by 'adopting' a hissing cockroach or hairy scorpion in order to honour their ex-lovers.

The San Francisco Zoo is giving Valentine's Day a bit of a twist. Instead of adopting a penguin, flamingo, or giraffe, people get the option of adopting a Madagascar hissing cockroach or giant hairy scorpion. Those who are ready to participate can dedicate their donation to a former lover, according to rt.com.

"Nothing says 'I've moved on' like adopting a giant cuddly cockroach in the name of your favorite ex," the zoo's website reads. "When you think about the detritus of your love life this Valentine's Day, consider adopting a Madagascar hissing cockroach for your ex."

Anyone who decides to "adopt" a cockroach can begin with donations from $24 to $ 1,000. The San Francisco Zoo will then send a missive to the donor along with a red Valentine's Day box containing little plastic cockroaches.

"For $50, they'll send the namesake of your choice a certificate and stuffed scorpion. Quite a parting shot! Or if you don't feel like splurging so much to tell your ex to fuck off and die, the hissing cockroach package is just $25: "The hissing cockroach is one of the largest species of cockroach, reaching 2-4 inches at maturity, but as we all know, some cockroaches just never seem to grow up." Ain't that the truth," according to jezebel.com.

Valentine's Day, though, comes with an option. The zoo will permit people to adopt even scorpions if they want to. They would be interested in highlighting it as an animal for anyone who has "fallen prey to love's cruel sting."

"Much like your low-life ex, they are usually found in and around low-elevation valleys where they dig elaborate burrows or 'caves,'" the website reads. "Also just like you-know-who, when a suitable victim wanders by, the scorpion grabs the doomed creature with its pinchers and stings the prey. After the prey is immobilized, the scorpion tears the carcass apart with its pinchers and begins feeding. Charming."

There will be donations to specific donors as well as the ex-alliances, starting at $50. They will include a juicy scorpion, as well as a certificate that confirms the adoption.

However, this is different from other "revenge" websites. The zoo will collect donations and send them for the good cause of caring for the animals and supporting its mission of creating more awareness for conservation and wildlife. The donations will help to support the San Francisco Zoological Society

"And with a little luck," the zoo added, "this generous donation will release your bad love life karma so that you never have to encounter a cockroach again."

The packages will not include live animals, and they are just "in name", according to nbcbayarea.com.

However, for those who are still happy with their romance, the zoo offers cuter adoption options that match the image of Valentine's Day, which might be the zoo's red panda, Magellanic penguins and ring-tailed lemurs. A number of big cats include the African lion, Sumatran tiger or snow leopard are also in the list.
