Paris will sue Fox News as the city's "image" is "insulted" and "prejudiced," Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said on Tuesday, during an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour.

"When we're insulted, and when we've had an image, then I think we'll have to sue, I think we'll have to go to court, in order to have these words removed," Hidalgo said. "The image of Paris has been prejudiced, and the honor of Paris has been prejudiced. And I think in the great discussion of truth everyone is to play its role. And we're going to have to be realistic and put things as they are," according to huffingtonpost.com.

Who does she want to corner and sue, Hidalgo was asked. She responded, "Fox News, that's the name."

The actual details of the lawsuit are not too clear. But still Fox News has apologized to "the people of France and England" for their statement that some European cities have "no-go zones" into which non-Muslims are not welcome.

"We empathize with the citizens of France as they go through a healing process and return to everyday life. However, we find the Mayor's comments regarding a lawsuit misplaced," Michael Clemente, Fox News' executive vice president of news, said.

Hidalgo's comments followed a number of Fox segments that pointed out parts of Paris and other European cities in which "Islamic law is practiced", but where the police are afraid to work, according to cnn.com.

The TV channel has been slammed by a range of critics. "Last week, Fox News was doing what it does best - stretching the truth like a taffy puller on the Boardwalk. But it seems that this time they messed with the wrong city," wrote John Paul Brammer to bluenationreview.com.

These kinds of statements only help to spread "a fearful narrative about Muslims", especially after the Charlie Hebdo attacks, say many of the critics.

For instance, one Fox show, exhibited an incorrect map of the "no-go zones" in and around Paris. On another, one guest who claimed to be a security expert said that Birmingham, England is a "totally Muslim city where non-Muslims don't go in."

British Prime Minister David Cameron, ridiculed the Birmingham claim: "When I heard this, frankly, I choked on my porridge and I thought it must be April Fools Day," he said.
