A well-maintained home ensures that you keep expensive repairs are bay. Most DIYs don't need you to have prior training which means you only need to buy the needed tools and you are good to go. Having a home maintenance plan will see you save money and reduce inconveniences. Most times you and your partner or you and your kids get to spend time together as you maintain your home. The following are 6 Simple DIY Home Maintenance Ideas;

Set the mower blade at the right height

Maintaining a healthy lawn is more than fertilizing and watering it. For a healthy lawn, you should mow the grass to the right height. When you trim the grass too short it gets weak; it grows thicker and stronger when trimmed at the right height. Longer grass keeps the weeds from germinating since they won't be getting enough light.

Each type of grass has the recommended trimming height. For cold climate grass types, the best height is between 2 to 2 ½ inches. For warm-climate grass types, the best height is between 1 to 2 inches. In the event you don't know the grass type, you should get some samples from the local nursery. Most lawns have different types of grass but they should all have the same cutting height. Additionally, make an appointment with experts like Lawnstreet who can give you proper guidelines to mow your garden.

Faucets

Leaking faucets are not only annoying but they also waste a lot of water thus increasing the water bill. Leaking faucets are as a result of the rubber worn out washers in the inner part of the faucet. To replace the rubbers, ensure you cut water supply from the mains. Unscrew the leaking handle and fix the new one.

Plumbing

For smooth water flow, ensure you have a hair strainer for all bathtubs in the house. After every bath, remove the hairs. Never pour oil and fats down the drain as they end clogging the drain. In the event you spill the oils down the drain, run hot soapy water; the soap emulsifies the oils.

Air filters

The central air and heating unit should be changed regularly during peak months. The longest you should leave an air filter on is 30 days for normal usage time. 2 weeks is the recommended time for high usage months.

Gutters

You should clean your gutters once per year by removing the debris and rinsing them off with a garden hose. Do not install gutter guards as they make it difficult to clean the gutters. Ensure the gutters are well fixed and replace any damaged or leaking parts.

Refrigerators

Always ensure your under-counter refrigerator door is tightly sealed. This helps to reduce the amount of energy it uses to keep the fridge components frozen. If your refrigerator has some coils at the back, ensure that you vacuum them often to remove dust and dirt. The coils have the coolant that keeps the refrigerator's internal temperature cold. If they get dirty, they stop functioning efficiently and the refrigerator may stop. Keep your fridge at all times as it uses less energy.

In conclusion, proper home maintenance saves you money. It increases the life of your structures and appliances. It also enhances energy efficiency which we all need to ensure for a better world.
