Kyle MacLachlan will reprise his role as Special Agent Dale Cooper in a special reboot of popular cult TV show, Twin Peaks. The series will make a limited return on the small screen next year in celebration of its 25th anniversary.

MacLachlan made the announcement during Showtime's Television Critics Association presentation on Monday.

"I think you need a damn good cup of coffee," MacLachlan said in reference to his character's love for coffee. "I'm very excited to return to the strange and wonderful world of Twin Peaks. May the forest be with you."

The news was confirmed by David Lynch, who tweeted: "Welcome back to #TwinPeaks Special Agent Dale Cooper! @Kyle_MacLachlan returns in '16 on @SHO_Network #damfinecoffee"

According to David Nevins, the president of Showtime, Lynch wanted to reboot the show specifically after 25 years. Nevins explained, "For David [Lynch] 25 years was the magic number. There's a reference in original, 'I'll see you [again] in 25 years.'"

In the series, which aired in 1990 and 1991 on ABC, FBI agent Cooper slowly unveiled the small town's many secrets as he investigated the murder of the town's homecoming queen, Laura Palmer. The series was set in a Northwestern town.

The reboot, which Lynch has signed on to direct, will promise some closure. Nevins stated, "They've been very specific in promising closure...and from what I've seen, I think this is going to live up to expectations and then some."

The third installment of the show will air in 2016. It will span nine episodes. So far, no other cast returns, such as Michael Ontkean, Lara Flynn Boyle and Sherilyn Fenn have been confirmed.

Since the original series ended, MacLachlan has acted in several hit TV shows, such as "Sex and the City," "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," and "Desperate Housewives." More recently, MacLachlan starred in "Portlandia" and "Agents of S.H.I.E.D."
