"Penny Dreadful" Season 3 surprised everyone with the announcement at the finale that the Showtime series will be concluding its run after three seasons. While many pleaded that the show can still continue on air, a spinoff series featuring Josh Hartnett's Ethan Chandler may be in the works.

"Penny Dreadful" Season 3 served as the series finale for the Eva Green-led drama on Showtime. This came as a surprise to everyone, as neither the cast nor the network announced the show's end after three seasons.

Series creator John Logan explained that "Penny Dreadful" Season 3 had to end with the death of Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) since the show has always been about her. Many fans, however, thought that the show can still continue even without Vanessa in it.

Indeed, "Penny Dreadful" was still able to continue even without Vanessa after Season 3. However, the continuation of the story took on the form of a comic book, reports Bleeding Cool.

This will follow the story of Ethan Chandler who cannot seem to move on from Vanessa's death. The "Penny Dreadful" comic book will reportedly take place six months after the events of the Season 3 finale.

This may help pave the way for "Penny Dreadful" Season 4 in the form of a spinoff series. After all, Josh Hartnett previously shared that he is willing to reprise his role for the show, reports Just Jared.

"Otherwise I'd say come back! I think everybody loved making it," he said.

This means that "Penny Dreadful" Season 4 may still happen as long as the remaining cast members are still open to reprising their roles. With the comic book focusing on Hartnett's character, it may only be a matter of time before Showtime considers doing a spinoff on the series.
