In a bid to make up for the downtime during Christmas, Sony is offering free extension of PlayStation Network service for its PlayStation Plus users.

Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox live were hacked by a group called The Lizard Squad on Christmas Day. This Monday Sony managed to get its services working again. To make up for the downtime during holiday season, Sony on Thursday announced that it would offer a five-day extension to those who had a membership active on December 25 or who had activated their trial before the network went down, NDTV reported.

"The extension will be automatically applied, so no action is necessary to receive the extension. We will post additional information here on PlayStation.Blog when the extension becomes available. If your membership or trial ends before the extension is available, you will receive five days of Plus to enjoy once the extension becomes available," Sony said on its blog.

The blog post also promises a 10 percent discount for all PSN users offer to be launched this on total cart purchases, to be launched later this month.

"Sometime this month we will announce that for a limited time, we will be offering a 10 percent discount code good for a one-time discount off a total cart purchase in the PlayStation Store as a thank you to all PSN members.

This discount can be used toward content available on PS Store including blockbuster new releases, award winning indie games, game add-ons and season passes, and an enormous selection of TV and Movies," the post reads.

One person who goes by the name Ryan Cleary spoke earlier this week claiming to be a member of Lizard Squad. He said the hack was perpetuated to highlight security flaws. The attack was stopped after internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom offered the group premium membership for his services, Daily Mail reported.
