Twitter: The Social Giant Suspended High-Profile Accounts, Is It Reasonable?

After Twitter got new set of features and tools on Tuesday, a number of high profile accounts associated with the alt-right movement were suspended. The social forum giant is taking hateful conduct seriously.

The alternative right or also known as alt-right, a loosely organized group with far-right ideologies who emerged as a counterpoint to mainstream conservatism and has also been associated with anti-Semitism and white nationalism.

 

Twitter has an excellent strategy that ensures the balanced freedom of expression and safety to minimize the harassment and hate speech. Del Harvey, VP of Trust and Safety said that sometimes exactly the same phrase can be abusive between two people and not abusive between two others, and layers of meaning and intent plus there is own sensitivities that abuse can vary tremendously.

According to Anti- Defamation League, more than 300,000 accounts have been suspended that violated policies related to violent threats. Then, Twitter suspended just 21 percent of 1,600 accounts that have sent out thousands of threats of rape and death targeted at journalist over the last past year.

The head of the National Policy Institute, Richard Spencer, personal Twitter accounts and accounts for the institute as well as his magazine, Radix Journal, were all suspended without notification. He termed the suspensions a coordinated attack against users with certain ideologies and viewpoints because he hasn't tweeted anything that might provoke violence or hatred.

As of Thursday, alt-right personalities Pax Dickinson, John Rivers and Ricky Vaughn were also suspended. Paul Town explained in an email to The Associated Press that his Twitter feed has been misconstrued as alt-right, he was also banned.

 

Glenn Beck, a conservative radio host reacted that the alt-right movement is truly terrifying and explained that former Breitbart News, Stephen Bannon confirmed that he has given power and voice to the white nationalists and alt-right a platform at Breitbart.

Twitter's reputation has been damaged by abuse and provocative online treats. The social networking giant won't tolerate violent and trolling.
