As maybe the first actor to join Warner Bros’s “Minecraft” movie, Steve Carell can be a good choice as he is a versatile actor. The Oscar-nominated “Foxcatcher” actor and star of the long-running television sitcom “The Office,” Carell’s involvement with the project is reportedly in progress for the unidentified starring role in “Minecraft.”

“Minecraft” was first released in 2009. It is a widely popular avatar game among children and adults that allows players to create their own characters and environments using textured cubes to vanquish nighttime monsters. An estimated 106 million copies of the game had been sold by summer this year. Meanwhile, it is the bestselling PC game to date and the second bestselling video game of all time, after Tetris.

It was a surprise that the game will be made into a movie. The film will be directed by “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star Rob McElhenney, who wrote the screenplay alongside “Wonder Woman” and Ice “Age: Continental Drift” writer Jason Fuchs. Roy Lee (“The LEGO Movie”) will produce via his Vertigo Entertainment production company along with Jill Messick, according to Millennium Post India.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Warner Brothers acquired the movie rights in February from Swedish developer Mojang AB. The “Minecraft: The Movie” is currently scheduled to hit theaters May 25, 2019. It was first teased over two years ago.

It can be concluded that 2016 is the year of adaptation for video games into films. Other forthcoming reported video game adaptations include “Assassin’s Creed,” reuniting Macbeth’s Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard and director Justin Kurzel; “Call of Duty,” “Pokémon Go,” “Fruit Ninja,” “Monster Hunter,” “Sonic the Hedgehog,” “Tetris” and a reboot of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, produced by and starring Alicia Vikander.
