Actor-comedian Chris Rock and his wife, Malaak Compton-Rock are headed for a divorce after 19 years of marriage.

"After much contemplation and 19 years of marriage, Chris and I have decided to go our separate ways," Malaak, 45, said in a statement first reported by People magazine. "Being fortunate enough to lead a life of service by working with those most vulnerable makes me well aware of life's blessings, even when faced with difficulties. While recognizing that this is a significant change, my children remain at the center of my life and their well-being is my top priority. It is in this spirit that I sincerely ask that their privacy and the privacy of our family be respected during this transition in our lives."

"Chris Rock has filed for divorce from his wife, Malaak," the actor's rep confirmed with E! News. "This is a personal matter and Chris requests privacy as he and Malaak work through this process and focus on their family."

The couple did not report why they decided to part ways. The separation was supposedly amicable.

In 2004, Chris, who is now 49, had said according to the Washington Post, "Marriage is beautiful. But if you think you're going to hold onto your individual self, you're an idiot."

He was also quoted, saying: "Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in a South African prison... Man can do hard labor in 100 degree South African heat for 27 years and did it with no problem. He got out of jail after 27 years of torture, spent six months with his wife and said, 'I can't take this s- no more!'"

Despite these statements that hint to an impending marriage, the couple has previously denied divorce rumors.

"Though we have tried in the past to take the high road and not comment on the tabloid media, we find it necessary to express on record how unfortunate it is that the Daily News, specifically, and other tabloid outlets have chosen to print untrue rumors and lies about our family and marriage," the couple had said in a statement. "It is extremely hurtful to us, our children, and our extended family. We remain, as always, very happy and committed to our marriage and the beautiful family that we have built."

Chris and Malaak were married in 1996. They have two daughters, Lola, 12 and Zahra 10.
