Sword Art Online (SAO) became an extremely popular series when it first came out in 2012. Now, fans will be delighted to hear that the SAO finally has a release date. Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale will be released worldwide in 1000 theaters on February 18, 2017, reports Mobipicker.

The movie's storyline was written by the original author of SAO's light novel series, Reki Kawahara, reports The BitBag. It involves a new ARMMORPG (Augmented Reality Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game), Ordinal Scale, which Kirito and his friends are playing.

Anime News Network says that Aniplex of America has released the following description for the story:

"It's just a game,or so I thought..
A brand new story written by original author, Reki Kawahara! People everywhere were enjoying a new game called Ordinal Scale, an ARMMORPG developed exclusively for the Augma, a new wearable console designed for AR (augmented reality) gaming. But, the players had no idea that a nightmare from the virtual world was starting to spread into reality! As his fellow players find themselves in danger, the hero is called upon once again."

A trailer for the movie has also been released. The original cast will be returning to voice Kirito, Asuna, and his friends. Three new characters were announced as well.

The first is Yuna, an Idol in Ordinal Scale, who gives players special upgrades when they encounter her in-game. The second is Dr. Shigemura, a professor and researcher of non-invasive BMI (Brain Machine Interface), whose peers think he's crazy. The third is Eiji, a mysterious swordsman who is one of the top players in Ordinal Scale.

The film is said to be the sequel to the final arc in the anime. It takes place after the Mother's Rosario Arc. Like SAO's fans, we can't wait to see where the story will take them.
