Sony Pictures unveiled the first trailer for much-anticipated movie "Passengers" - a sci-fi adventure and love story rolled into one.

Starring one of Hollywood's top stars Jennifer Lawrence, the movie is directed by Morten Tyldum and will feature television celebrity Chris Pratt of Parks and Rec fame in the other lead role.

The movie is about two passengers, Aurora (Lawrence) and Jim (Pratt) aboard a spacecraft that is transporting around 5,000 people in cryogenic sleep to a distant planet for build a new life. The voyage is disturbed when the hibernation pods of the two unexpectedly wakes them 90 years before time. As they race to find the reason for their early awakening and save the ship from an imminent collapse, they fall in love.

Tyldum who has earlier directed "The Imitation Game" has said that the movie is the "big love story" of this generation. The script by Jon Spaihts has been popular in Hollywood ever since it was included in the 2007 Black List, a list that has the most liked but yet unproduced screenplays.

"It's just one of those stories that really grabs you," said Tyldum. "The script was so smart and funny and clever and it was such a page turner, I couldn't put it down."

The film has been in production for quite some time now, with other stars previously linked to the project being Keanu Reeves, Emily Blunt, Rachel McAdams and Reese Witherspoon.

Said to cost anywhere between $90 million to 120 million, the big budget movie is set in a luxury spaceship that looks like a cruise ship with jazzy gadgets including a robot barman (Michael Sheen).

The two-and-a-half minutes long trailer is action packed, showing palpable chemistry between the two lead actors.

"Passengers" will have a Christmas release, with the movie hitting the screens on Dec. 21.
