Virtual reality (VR) is touted to become a cultural phenomenon anchored in technological foundation of the 21st century. Barely six months following their global product launching, Samsung Gear VR has just reached a milestone for having 1 million users in a single month according to Facebook-owned Oculus.

According to NBC News, Facebook acquired Oculus for $2 billion which provides software for the South Korean tech giant's VR headset. The latest milestone also underscores how it makes a lot of sense for Facebook to create more content to get a steady stream of users as the virtually reality sector continues to expand.

Some analysts predict that VR will be the future of many computing activities that are limited to mostly non-VR devices as of the moment. If virtually reality continues to make further dent in the technology sector, the market could be valued at around $40 billion by 2020.

"A million is kind of a magic number for a lot of people to start taking this seriously. They tell us, 'Give us a call when you've a hit a million users.' Well, now it has," remarked Max Cohen, head of Oculus mobile division as quoted by Engadget.

As far as the content is concerned, developers have so far created more than 250 apps for the Gear VR device, Tech Times reported. Although the numbers look insignificant, the numbers are an indication of momentum as it's only been six months since Samsung Gear VR powered by Oculus was introduced.

The virtual reality concept is still in its budding stage and may take some time before it can fully take off. Already, the market is starting to blossom as a number of tech companies are starting to make their own virtual reality devices. The technology seeks to immerse and simulate people in a seemingly 'real' yet artificial world.

For Facebook exec Mark Zuckerberg, investing a lot of resources in VR is a strategic move as he is convinced that it will be Silicon Valley's 'next big thing' pushing creative disruptors and trail blazers like Apple and Google to pour in resources for VR research and development.
