Sony officially confirmed Wednesday that its PS4 sales have surpassed 10 million worldwide after keeping the statistics under wraps for months.

Sony, the renowned electronics company, is undoubtedly enjoying global success with its next-gen gaming console, PlayStation 4. In April it sold more than 7 million units globally. On Wednesday, the Japanese conglomerate confirmed that the PlayStation 4 sales have reached 10 million units globally.

PlayStation 4 sales have outperformed its rival Xbox One continuously since the start. Both Sony and Microsoft launched their respective next-gen gaming consoles in November. Xbox One sales were quite impressive but failed to keep up pace with PS4.

Sony sold more than 1 million units on the first day of launch in the United States and Canada. The demand for the console continued and by February 2014, the Japanese company reached its targeted goal of surpassing 5 million units by March. The company crossed 6 million units in early March and in April the company surpassed 7 million units worldwide.

"The responses we have received for the PS4 system's unique gameplay experiences powered by the network, along with its vast game portfolio has been phenomenal, and I am absolutely delighted that PS4 was able to reach this commemorative milestone in less than 9 months," Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony, said in a press statement, Wednesday. "We're so grateful for the enormous support from PlayStation gamers worldwide, and we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and services in the months ahead."

Sony's success was not only limited to PS4 sales but the company witnessed a favorable response to its software too. More than 30 million copies were sold through retail channels and downloaded via web on PlayStation Store, Sony said.

The data  is for both PS4 and PS4 titles as of August 10, 2014. Microsoft hasn't updated its Xbox One sales figure yet.
