There's In App For Drivers License In Iowa

Iowa Department of Transportation is planning to put the state drivers license on an app that will hold the same information found on a plastic license.

State government and authorities like police and airport security will accept these digital licenses as valid ID. For verifying the authenticity of the information, a PIN will be used.

In an interview with CNN, Department of Transportation spokesperson Andrea Henry said that the state could possible use fingerprint or facial recognition software to verify authenticity in future.

However, going all digital has its own caveat. One of the prime issues could be adding license to multiple devices. Also, there are high chances that your phone might be dead right when you get pulled over.

The app is set to release in early 2015 for both iOS and Android. However the time for release is flexible as there are several concerns yet to be addressed.

Another potential problem is that right now there's no way to lock the screen when you get pulled over - a police officer could potentially search through your phone activity when you hand over to let them check your license. The DOT is still working on a solution.

Residents of Iowa have the option to stick with drivers license too. "Really, it's about giving customers a choice," said Henry. "We're in an increasingly mobile world, and there are so many things that are connected to your mobile phone."
