As we head towards tonight's midseason finale, many fans are still focusing on the relationship between Stefan and Caroline. Many "Steroline" fans had to watch in dismay as the young Miss Forbes admitted her feelings to Stefan even though he didn't feel the same. According to an interview executive producer Caroline Dries did with TV Guide, although there may not be a passionate "Steroline" hook up anytime soon - fans of the couple shouldn't lose hope.

"It can be romantic without them kissing," Dries tells TV Guide. "I said at the beginning of the season we were going to slow-play it to make it really strong. At the beginning she also said, 'hate you' and broke up with their friendship.

"But even as that's happening, there's still an undercurrent of sexual tension, at least on her end, and just because you refuse to look at somebody doesn't mean you don't like them. Sometimes it means the opposite. It's still there even if they're not jumping in the bed together."

Judging from the clip below, Caroline's mom might be trying to play matchmaker.

As for the other fan-favorite relationship, Elena will have some things to consider when it comes to Damon. "She admitted she has a hard time shaking these feelings that keep cropping up inside," Dries tells TVGuide. "Even though she's forgotten she loved him, it's still there and she's wrestling with that at the beginning of this episode." Dries adds Elena will experience something huge in this episode. It will cause her to realize "our time here isn't forever - even as immortals that's not guaranteed - so why waste another second of it?"

Of course, there are bigger problems in this episode - Bonnie is still locked in 1994 and Kai has returned to wreak havoc. And, oh yeah, he's made a deal with Tyler.

Dries tells TVGuide, Kai "has a lot more up his sleeve" which probably means more problems for Jo. As Dries points out, Kai doesn't want to hurt the twins - he just wants to merge with Jo so he can become an extremely powerful witch. The EP points out Kai doesn't want to hurt the twins, the twins don't want to merge and Tyler wants Liv to be OK. In some weird way they all have similar goals.

As for Bonnie, Dries says Damon is still fighting to get her back to the present. She'll also be reminiscing, quite sadly, about past Christmases she's spent with her friends.

You can check out the trailer for tonight's episode below. Oh and if you're wondering about team Matt and Jeremy, Dries tells the website they "make a pretty good team." Matt has some hunting skills he learned from Tripp, which we may get a chance to see.

"The Vampire Diaries" airs Thursdays at 8/7c on The CW.
