Instagram announced that it has earned more than 300 million users over the past four years. Around 9 months ago, Instagram had 200 million users.

In a blog post, announcing the news, Kevin Systrom, CEO, Instagram wrote what started as dream of two friends has now turned into a global community, adding that 300 million users share more than 70 million photos and videos each day.

"Instagram is home to creativity in all of its forms, a place where you can find everything from images of the Nile River to the newest look from Herschel Supply or a peek inside the mind of Taylor Swift," Systrom wrote in the post.

This milestone puts Instagram ahead of Twitter in terms of active users, which had 284 million monthly active users in October.

According to estimates, about 52.5 million smartphone users in U.S. use Instagram and more than 80 percent of them are between ages 12 and 34.

Instagram was launched in 2010. It allows users to edit and share photos. The service can be accessed via its mobile apps available for iOS, Android and Windows Phone. On browsers, only content can be viewed and not uploaded.

Instagram was acquired by Facebook in 2012 for $1 billion. Facebook has also acquired WhatsApp which has more than 600 million users.
