In an extreme attempt to look good, women are now opting for injecting doses of botox into their calves.

The procedure costs £300 and helps slim down the calves so that the women can wear on-trend winter boots making a fashion statement.

Even as the practice of injecting one's face with various toxins has always been around, this new trend is expected to take the Botox market by a storm.

"Calf Botox is especially big business in Asia, where women have muscular legs but want delicate, bird-like limbs. But it is now also increasingly popular in the UK," said Dr Carolyn Berry, practicing on Harley Street.

The procedure takes less than an hour and one can lose up to 2 cm on each calf.

The treatment reportedly only affects a few of the outer muscle fibres so that it does not limit the functioning of the calf and all regular activities can go on as usual.

However, the treatment can weaken the muscles in its attempt to prevent them from contracting properly. It might also lead to muscle wastage and the person might face the risk of blood clots as well, Cosmopolitan reports.

Naveen Cavale, who is a cosmetic surgeon and member of British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), warns that calf botox is potentially dangerous.

"By preventing muscles from contracting properly, Botox weakens them and causes muscle wastage. We use our calf muscles every time we take a step; why would you want to weaken something that helps you walk, just for the sake of your appearance?" said Cavale, helpmeoutDOC reports.
