The cult movie Beetlejuice which premiered in 1988 has a fan following that has only grown with time. Tim Burton, who has hence created many wonderfully weird movies like Edward Scissorhands, Alice in Wonderland, Dark Shadows and Corpse Bride, has been dropping hints about making a much awaited sequel to the movie for over a decade.

Excitement regarding the sequel had risen after the moviemaker was quoted as saying that he had a script ready for Beetlejuice 2 but recent reports seem to question the truth of the situation.

Initially, the moviemaker had claimed that the movie would be made only if actor Michael Keaton would agree to reprise his role as the eponymous character. On the contrary, recent reports suggest a change in this attitude as one of Burton's favourite artists, Johnny Depp, is rumoured to have bagged the role. Though no reports have been reported to confirm this piece of news, it is easy to believe that Burton would offer the role to Depp who is famous for portraying some of the weirdest and strangest characters in Hollywood. The rapport shared by the stars also adds mettle to the possibility.

When asked about the possibility of a sequel, writer Seth Grahame-Smith and actress Wynona Rider claimed that all the groundwork has been done and that they are only waiting for the perfect time to begin shooting. However, a representative of Tim Burton claimed that all news regarding the sequel is fabricated and the quotes attributed to the moviemaker are false on all accounts. This was again called into question when Winona Rider mentioned in an interview that the movie is underway but is still being kept a secret.

Now that Michael Keaton is busy with Birdman and Spotlight and Tim Burton is occupied with Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children with a Dumbo reboot scheduled right after, it remains to be seen if Depp will be roped in or even if a sequel will be made at all.
