Sony has released a limited edition PlayStation 4 with a retro, grey look to celebrate its 20-year anniversary since the first console was released in 1994.

It's been 20 happy and successful years for Sony's PlayStation. Over the years, the Japanese tech giant has made a brand name for itself in the gaming industry. The company's latest PlayStation 4 is the largest selling console in the world, which has raked in millions since its release a year ago. But this is an important day in Sony's history book as the company launched the original PlayStation in Japan on 3 December, 1994. To mark this grand occasion, Sony launched a limited edition PS4 clad in retro grey attire similar to the original PlayStation.

The Japanese tech giant announced the milestone in an official blog post on Wednesday. Sony has taken care of minute details in designing the limited edition PS4, like the four-color PlayStation logo as in the original PS.

"20 years is a long time! In 1994, many outsiders thought that Sony was slightly crazy to launch the original PlayStation into an incredibly competitive gaming market," Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, wrote in the post on the PlayStation blog. "Who could blame them? Sony was (and is!) famous for engineering great electronics, audio equipment, and many other consumer devices. But game consoles?!"

Well, the result is quite clear. Sony is the largest gaming company with millions of PS4 units selling in different parts of the world. Sony took six months after its release to hit the first milestone of 1 million units of the original PlayStation. And now, the company's flagship gaming console has surpassed 13.5 million units in little over a year.

If you'd like to be a part of Sony's remarkable journey by ordering the limited edition PS4, act fast because Sony plans to sell only 12,300 units of the Anniversary edition PS4. Pre-orders for the console will begin Saturday and Sony will explain how to get one during its PlayStation Experience keynote starting Saturday morning at 10:00am Pacific Time.
