The 71-year old singer had his heyday in 1971 with the release of the single, 'American Pie, a song said to be reminiscing the fatal plane crash of The Big Bopper--Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson in 1959.

In his entire career, he is said to have made 40 gold and platinum records, BBC said. He has also recently performed at a lobster festival in August last year.

It can be previously remembered that Mclean sold the original script and notes of his hit single, American Pie for $1.2 million in an auction.
