An estimated 47M Americans are expected to travel in this year's upcoming Thanksgiving making it as the busiest Thanksgiving since 2007.

A study conducted by AAA said that the expected 46.9 million Americans who will travel 50 miles away from home is a 0.6 percent increase from last year's figures, Skift reported.

Still, the figures is 7.3 percent lower than the number of people travelling during Thanksgiving in 2007 when the economy is so much better.

It is also anticipated that 90 percent of these travelers will be using their cars. Good news for drivers, this year's gasoline is $2.15 per gallon, 74 cents lower than its price last year. This means that a family going to a location 300 miles away from home can save $12 for the long weekend.

"Ninety percent of those traveling for the holiday will go by car. They will enjoy the lowest gas prices for the holiday since 2008," AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesperson Jana Tidwell announced further saying that 500,000 are expected to start travelling by Tuesday next week, CBS Philly said.

Tidwell also said that cab driving is expected to rise up with people wanting to visit their relatives living 50 miles away during the occasion.

An estimated of 45,000 passengers will also travel by plane with Amtrak's Chelsea Kopta expecting a total of 750,000 passengers in this holiday season.

With the high numbers of passengers, Kopta advised to book in advance to avoid hassle.

"So you want to book now because this is definitely the busiest time of the year for Amtrak - that Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after Thanksgiving by far and away the busiest time of the year," he said.

Meanwhile, airfares are also said to go down by 10 percent this year in the leading 40 domestic routes as what the AAA Leisure's Travel Index indicates, Sun Sentinel said.
