A man was able to survive a shark attack after ripping out the eye of the attacker.

The incident took place off the Hawaiian island of Oahu near Lanikai Beach, according to ABC 7.

Tony Lee was swimming in the crisp blue waters of the Pacific when he felt a yank on his legs and turned around to see both of them in the mouth of an enormous shark that was pulling him under. The 44-year-old kicked into survival mode, hitting the shark with everything in his power, punching and punching and finally getting so desperate he reached for the shark's eye, ripping it from the socket.

The serious injury caused the shark to let go of Lee's legs and allowed him to swim for the surface. Lee said that when he reached the surface, he still had the eye in his hand.

Lee was rescued by a father and son duo who were out canoeing at the time of the attack and heard Lee's screams and saw his struggle. The two pulled him out of the water and brought him into shore.

The duo said it was pure luck they happened by Lee when they did, as one of their canoes had gotten a crack and they were heading in earlier than they had planned when they came across Lee.

Lee has lost a foot as a result of the attack and must undergo serious surgeries to save his remaining foot. Doctors say his athleticism and good physical health were critical to his survival.
