Bono had some impressive  understudies take over his role at the World Aid Day concert in Times Square, Monday. Bruce Springsteen and Christ Martin of Cold Play performed in his stead with the U2 band, as their frontman  recovered from a serious bike injury.

The band called themselves  U2 Minus 1 for the concert.

"Friends have stepped in to save U2's surprise World AIDS Day (RED) performance, which was jeopardised by Bono's November 16th bike accident in Central Park," the band wrote on their Facebook page, reports the Rolling Stone magazine. "Adam Clayton, The Edge and Larry Mullen Jr. will be joined by Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay's Chris Martin, each of whom will take a turn as frontman on the U2 songs. Appearing at the personal invitation of U2, Springsteen and Martin have graciously donated their time and talents to save the World AIDS Day event from cancellation."

Springsteen performed "Where the Streets Have No Name" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". Hundreds braved the rains to attend the concert to mark the World AIDS Day,

Other singers who performed at the RED concert were Kanye West and Carrie Underwood. RED works to prevent  HIV transmission from mother to child.

"This year is a World AIDS Day like no other," Bono said in a statement. "The world reached a tipping point in the fight against AIDS - more people were newly added to life-saving treatment than were newly infected with the virus. A lot of people are calling it the beginning of the end of AIDS."

Bono suffered serious injuries while biking in the Central Park in New York last month and underwent a five-hour surgery.

He suffered multiple facial fractures and a shoulder and leg injury and will need  "intensive and progressive therapy", his doctors said to the media.

The RED concert can be seen here.
