Two boys busy building a snow fort were inadvertently trapped under a snow bank for several hours in Newburgh, New York, before being rescued.

A plow operator clearing the snow in a parking lot pushed snow over them without realizing they were playing there, according to the Associated Press.

The 11-year-old and 9-year-old boys were playing in the parking lot across their homes when they were buried under the snowbank Wednesday. They were noticed missing around 6 pm. And the residents and police started a search.

Police called in search dogs and started questioning the neighbourhood and the boys' friends and realised that the children  were last seen playing in the parking lot. A frantic search around the area led to positive results.

"From what I understand, a dog was barking and took the attention to where these children were at," a witness Robert Nicosia told CBS news. "Somebody heard the muffled sounds of the kids under the snow and they were digging them out, and people were screaming for shovels.".

The police were able to dig them out by 2 a.m. Thursday  night and both were breathing and alive. They were rushed to a hospital where one boy was discharged and the other is under observation and recovering well.

Calling it a Thanksgiving miracle, the parents of the children thanked the police and the residents for helping in the search.
