Android Lollipop Update: Advantage Nexus and Samsung Devices

A new update to Android's Database by Google detailing the user rates of the various versions of android proves the growing popularity of this platform. Over 18% of the active devices use this popular operating system reveal an article published in Forbes.com. The article also expresses concerns over Google's ability to fix security issues, apart from addressing other vital concerns.

In a bid to address such concerns, Google has come up with some major steps. In the case of Nexus 5, apart from the regular Android 5.1.1 updates and the Android M Developer Preview second version, received by these handsets earlier, Google has now announced monthly security updates in addition to the general platform updates. In addition, Google has recently rolled out the Stagefright Vulnerability patch.

Android Police reports that on August 5, Seven Nexus devices, including Nexus 5, received regular security updates from Google. This will make security patches independent of the regular platform releases, and the devices will receive updates via monthly security updates, if Google play services fail to update them.

Releasing first such updates Google rolled out the Stagefright Vulnerability fix, releasing it as over to air update; in addition, the fix was released in the form of a factory image (LMY48I) posting it on the Nexus developer page, enabling users to fix it themselves. Users can avail this form the Google Developers page, as well. On August 5 Sprint subscribers of Nexus 5 received the information about the update and (LMY48I) on its software update section explaining the Stagefright patch.

Samsung also has announced similar security patches on a monthly basis for Android devices. Recently two variants of Samsung Galaxy Note 4 model SM-N910T- T mobile and sprint- have received Android lollipop 5.1.1. firmware via over the air (OTA). This patch ""N910T3UVU1DOFC," includes security enhancements, including fix for stagefright vulnerability fix.

Users can update the patches either manually, or with the OTA option by going to the settings tab, select "About the Phone" option, and select "Software Update "option.
