Ashley Madison, the site that enables its users to cheat on their spouses has been hacked by a group of hackers calling themselves 'The Impact Team'.

The hackers are now threatening to expose the personal details of its 37 million users if the site refuses to shut down its service.

Avid Life Media, Ashley Madison's parent company has confirmed the breach and is currently working with law enforcement agencies to try and track the people responsible for the hack.

In a statement to the press, the company said, "We apologise for this unprovoked and criminal intrusion into our customers' information."

"We have been able to secure our sites, and close the unauthorised access points.

"Any and all parties responsible for this act of cyber-terrorism will be held responsible."

Meanwhile, the Impact Team has already published snippets of compromised data online and has warned the company that it would release customer names, nude photos, profiles, secret sexual fantasies and credit card details of the users, if their demands were not met.

Ashley Madison is known for using the controversial slogan, "Life is short, Have an affair". The company was planning to raise up to $200 million through an IPO in the London Stock Exchange.
