Omar Sharif, Star of 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'Doctor Zhivago' Dies at 83

Omar Sharif, star of Hollywood classics like 'Doctor Zhivago' and 'Lawrence of Arabia' died today at a hospital in Cairo after suffering a heart attack. He was 83.

His agent Steve Kenis had confirmed earlier this year that Sharif was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Sharif gained global recognition in 1962 for his role in 'Lawrence of Arabia' where he played the tribal leader opposite to Peter O'Toole. The film earned him an Oscar nomination and also a Golden Globe for best supporting actor.

Sharif later went on to star in 'Doctor Zhivago'. His other film credits include Funny Girl, Mckenna's Gold, Che!, Behold a Pale Horse, the Yellow Rolls Royce and the Pink Panther Strike Again.

Sharif was born Michel Dimitri Shalhoub to an affluent Melkite Greek Catholic family in Lebanon. He studied mathematics and physics at the University of Cairo and went on to study at London's prestigious acting school RADA.

He started appearing in several Egyptian films, marrying actress Faten Hamama and converted to Islam. The couple separated in 1966 following his move to Europe.

The actor is also known for being a world class bridge player. He is survived by a son and two grandchildren.
