According to authorities, 22-year-old Devon Staples died on Saturday due to injuries from a firework as he was trying to set it off on his head, The Boston Globe reported.

At the time of the incident, Staples was attending to a 4th of July party at a home located in a small Maine city near the Canadian border.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Stephen McCausland told the reporters that the incident took place around 10 p.m and the young man died instantly. "Apparently, he thought that was a great idea. His friends they thought dissuaded him from doing it, and the next thing they knew, he ignited the fireworks and he was killed instantly," he said, reported by The Globe.

The 25-year-old brother of the deceased,Cody Staples said that he was present at the scene when the incident took place and added that there was nothing that could have been done to save Devon. "There was no rushing him to the hospital. There was no Devon left when I got there." The brother also said that Devon was not the kind of person who would do such a stupid thing but he would pretend doing such things to entertain others, The Globe said.

Since 2012, it has been legal to set off fireworks in the state of Maine in an effort to stimulate the northern state's economy. Staples is the very first victim after the law regarding to fireworks has changed in the state.

Minor injuries involving fireworks have been reported all over the country during the 4th of July celebrations. However some folks were not lucky enough to get away with minor burns and scrapes. The Globe reported that another young man from Montana also died due to fireworks accident and a 52-year-old man from New Jersey lost a big portion of muscles on his lower leg due to an explosion from fireworks.
