Facebook is considering a drone and satellite fleet to connect users in developing countries, showing off a "laser communications system." Company's Connectivity Lab is working to beam data from the sky, Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a post.

"As part of our Internet.org efforts, we're working on ways to use drones and satellites to connect the billion people who don't live in range of existing wireless networks," he wrote on his Facebook page.

"Our Connectivity Lab is developing a laser communications system that can beam data from the sky into communities. This will dramatically increase the speed of sending data over long distances."

Recently, both Facebook and Google dropped their plans to build low-earth orbit satellites to deliver internet to the world.

Facebook, which owns major communication apps, i.e. Messenger and WhatsApp, is counted among over the top (OTT) players that provide calling and messaging services and an alternate communication technology may help it bypass traditional telecom operators.
