New patent by Apple aims to make iPhone more beautiful by removing the antenna lines and further cleaning up the phone design. In the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the antenna lines are the two horizontal lines visible on the back.

According to Apple, the metal is "not radio frequency transparent, metal is generally a poor choice of material when the devices utilize electromagnetic wave transmission, such as radio frequency transmission for communication."

They further describe "portions of the housings that cover antennas and touch sensors are made of a non-metallic material such as plastic or glass. Unfortunately, plastic surfaces and glass surfaces have different visual qualities than metallic surfaces, which result in a visible break in the metallic surface of the housing."

The patent filling by Apple reads, "Composite structures that have an appearance of an anodized bulk metal but that is non-capacitive and/or radio frequency (RF) transparent are disclosed. The composite structure can be part of an enclosure of an electronic device."

It further adds that new composite structure can outfit the device with a smooth look "without interfering with the functioning of some electronic components of the electronic device, such as RF antennas, touch pads and touch screens."

It might be a quite small improvement but a welcome aesthetic change.
